Massive Neutrinos in Cosmology

چکیده

There are two places in cosmology where the mass of neutrinos would play a significant role. One is leptogenesis in the early universe, and the other is the evolution of mass density fluctuations that are explored with cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuations and the formation of cosmic structure. There is one more place where the presence of neutrinos is generally important — primordial nucleosynthesis, but the effect of neutrino mass is negligible unless it is unrealistically heavy. In this talk I discuss at some length the effect of the neutrino mass on the CMB fluctuations and cosmic structure formation, and the limit on the neutrino mass therefrom: we saw a substantial progress in our understanding after the reports of Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) [1] and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) [2] but also some confusions still remain. We start with a brief mention about the status of leptogenesis.

On the physics of massive neutrinos

Massive neutrinos open up the possibility for a variety of new physical phenomena. Among them are oscillations and double beta decay. Furthermore they influence several fields from particle physics to cosmology. In this article the concept of massive neutrinos is given and the present state of experimental research is extensively reviewed. This includes astrophysical studies of solar, supernova...

Neutrinos and Dark Matter

In these lectures I highlight some key features of massive neutrinos in the context of cosmology. I first review the thermal history and the free-streaming kinematics of the uniform cosmic background neutrinos. I then describe how fluctuations in the phase space distributions of neutrinos and other particles arise and evolve after neutrino decoupling according to the linear perturbation theory ...

Quantum Mechanics of Neutrino Oscillations

Subtle problems in the theory of neutrino oscillations in vacuum are discussed [1]. It is shown that Lorentz invariance implies that in general flavor neutrinos in oscillation experiments are superpositions of massive neutrinos with different energies and different momenta. It is argued that a wave packet description of massive neutrinos is necessary in order to understand the physics of neutri...

Non-accelerator neutrino mass searches

Neutrinos play a fundamental role in several fields of physics from cosmology down to particle physics. Even more, the observation of a non-vanishing rest mass of neutrinos would have a big impact on our present model of particle physics and might guide towards grand unified theories. Currently three evidences exist showing effects of massive neutrinos: the deficit in solar neutrinos, the zenit...

Neutrino Astrophysics

A general overview of neutrino physics and astrophysics is given, starting with a historical account of the development of our understanding of neutrinos and how they helped to unravel the structure of the Standard Model. We discuss why it is so important to establish if neutrinos are massive and introduce the main scenarios to provide them a mass. The present bounds and the positive indication...
